Maricopa County Reads Challenge
Summary:
Write a story about spending an afternoon with a desert animal. What activities would you do together? What kind of lunch might you eat? Share your story with an adult when you are done.
This is a story I wrote for one of my state's Summer Reading challenges. I wrote it for kids.
One day I went for a walk in my neighborhood. It was a pleasant enough day and I was walking along the desert path when I happened upon a friendly lizard. I said hello to the lizard and introduced myself.
“Hello there, Mr. Lizard. My name is Bill. It is so nice to meet you. What is your name?” I said.
I said this without expecting an answer because lizards don’t talk, but believe it or not, the lizard replied to me.
“Hi there! My name is Larry. It’s nice to meet you too!” the lizard squeaked.
I was so surprised by this.
“Oh my gosh! You can talk?”
“Yes, of course I can talk!”
“Wow! I’ve never met a talking lizard before,” I said.
“So what brings you here on this lovely day?”
“Well, I just wanted to take a walk to enjoy the weather today.”
Larry the lizard walked closer to me and crawled up my legs to rest on my forearm. I laughed.
“I’m ticklish!”
“No worries. So do you want to hang out with me?” asked Larry.
“I would love to!” I said with excitement.
“We can go look for food for me to eat,” Larry suggested.
“Okay. What do you eat, Larry?”
“I really love fresh berries,” Larry said, licking his lips.
“I saw a big bush full of berries farther back while I was walking here. We can go there.”
“Oh, yes please!”
We walked back to where I saw the berry bush before and Larry crawled down my arm as I leveled it with the bush so he could walk onto the bush. He ate all the berries he wanted.
I noticed that the sun was starting to go down and I had to head back home.
“Hey, Larry. The sun’s going down and I have to go back home. It’s been great hanging with you. Maybe I’ll see you next time?”
“Aw man. I really liked hanging out with you today. Yeah, totally. You can come back whenever you like. I live around here, so you’ll know where to find me. We can find some other foods I like for next time.”
“Yeah! That sounds like fun! I’ll see you around. Bye!”
“Bye!”
I walked all the way home and thought about how cool it was that I talked to a lizard today and I wondered what other foods that he might eat.
